Stoke Poges is a small village with a primary school, doctors surgery, post office, pharmacy, supermarket and coffee shop. It has a rural feeling being surrounded by attractive mature woodland. Stoke Poges is mentioned in the Domesday Book and is famous for its churchyard at St Giles where Thomas Gray wrote “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard”. Stoke Poges is renowned for its open fields, meadows, beech woods and extensive common and heath land. Nearby Gerrards Cross, Beaconsfield, Farnham Common all offer good shopping facilities.
The area’s excellent communication links include regular rail connections to London (Paddington) from Burnham, Taplow or Slough. The Chiltern line runs from Beaconsfield and Gerrards Cross train stations with trains to Marylebone. Crossrail trains from Burnham, Taplow or Slough offer quick journeys to London’s West End, City and Canary Wharf. The M40 is about 4.6 miles away, giving access to Heathrow and the remainder of the motorway network. Comprehensive nearby leisure facilities include a selection of highly regarded golf courses including Stoke Park, with polo and horse racing in Ascot and Windsor, and rowing at Henley on Thames and Marlow. The area is also reputed for its schools with a choice of highly regarded and established private schools including St Mary’s, St Georges Ascot, Davenies, Godstowe, High March, Caldicott and Wycombe Abbey. Grammar Schools are at Burnham for girls and boys, together with The Royal Grammar School and John Hampden for boys in High Wycombe and Beaconsfield High School for girls.
