    Description

The Great Stair & Library is a magnificent Grade I Listed country residence extending to approximately 12,083 sq ft, arranged over four floors and incorporating some of the principal rooms of this historic mansion. The property provides seven bedrooms and six bathrooms, together with grand reception rooms, an impressive open-plan Kitchen / Breakfast Room, spectacular Great Stair and Library, and exceptional southerly views across the Deer Park towards Rutland Water.

The property provides a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most architecturally significant portions of Burley on the Hill, retaining its original State Rooms and the celebrated Great Stair with Lanscroon's historic murals.

    Historical Note

Burley on the Hill has a history dating back to the Domesday Book, with the present mansion reconstructed for Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham and 7th Earl of Winchilsea, from 1695 in the Palladian style. Gerard Lanscroon decorated the Great Stair and Ball Room between 1708 and 1712, while Humphry Repton later re-landscaped the grounds. The Great Stair and Library survived the disastrous fire of 1908, which destroyed much of the western half of the mansion, and retain Lanscroon's celebrated baroque murals to this day.
